LiU researchers go Open Access

According to recent studies, articles published Open Access are cited more than articles only published in subscription-required journals. This is probably one of the reasons why many LiU researchers choose to publish OA.

Research results published behind paywalls do not reach all its potential readership and are therefore not as much cited as they could have been. Today, almost all research can be made available Open Access, after a shorter or longer embargo period.

There are three ways to publish Open Access:

  • By publishing in an OA journal (Gold Open Access)
  • By paying to make individual articles available OA (Hybrid Open Access),
  • By, after the established embargo period, publishing in DiVA or other repositories (Green Open Access or parallel publishing)

Many studies show that articles published Open Access – either in the Gold, Green, or Hybrid version – are cited more than articles only published in subscription journals (e.g. McKieran, E et al (2016) Point of view: How open science helps researchers succeed. eLife  Doi: 10.7554/eLife.16800)

In 2015, 17 percent of all articles by LiU affiliated researchers were published as Gold Open Access, 5 percent as Hybrid Open Access, and 26 percent as Green Open Access. In other words, nearly half of all research from Linköping University were made available Open Access in some form.

During the international Open Access Week 23rd to 29th of October, OA is in particular focus. If you want to know more about your options to make your research available Open Access, please contact us at ep@ep.liu.se.
