Open Access

Open Access (OA) means that articles are published freely online. Open Access allows anyone to read, download, copy, distribute, print the articles, and use the texts in such a way that they do not violate any copyright law.

Open Access is included as part of the open science umbrella concept, which aims to open up several parts of the research process. Central parts, apart from Open Access, are open learning resources, open source codes, open peer review and open research data. The central idea is that this helps to increase the quality of research and ensure that research results should be commonly available.

All research publications will eventually be made available to all at no cost. In most cases, it means that the cost of publishing will be transferred from the reader to the author. However, there are OA journals where publication is free.

Different types of OA

There are mainly three types of Open Access. These are commonly refered to as gold Open Access, hybrid Open Access and green Open Access.

Gold Open Access

Hybrid Open Access

Green Open Access

Publishing open access in a journal where all articles are available for free. We recommend this because the articles then can reach a wider readership.

Articles published open access in a subscription based journal where most items are behind a pay wall. We do not recommend hybrid open access, as it is usually more expensive than gold, and also reduces the visibility of the items as they will “drown” among a larger number of items behind the pay wall.

Articles published open access possibly with a delay usually in an institutional repository (e.g. DiVA). Often it is the authors' last draft version of an article that can be made available. It is also called parallel publishing. About 90% of all articles can be published this way. Highly recommended.

Why publish Open Access?

Articles published OA do not end up behind a pay wall and hence are more visible than articles published in traditional subscription-based journals. This way they are more widely read and likely more cited.

In most subscription based journals, the copyright is assigned to the publisher/journal. When publishing Open Access, you usually retain copyright. With licenses from Creative Commons, you decide what others can do with your article. Creative Commons is often very good for you as an author.  If in doubt we can give advice on what creative commons license you should choose.

Many advantages with Open Access.

Research funders often require Open Access publishing

More and more funding agencies are requiring OA publishing. See our dedicated page for funders and mandated OA for further information.

Some Open Access journals are dubious

Most OA journals are serious, but it is important to remember that there are a number of dubious publishers operating in the Open Access market. See our pages about predatory publishing and journal evaluation.

Reduced publications fees in some Open Access journals

Green Open Access (parallel publishing) is free of charge, while gold Open Access and hybrid Open Access often involve publication fees (APC). LiU does not have a central fund to assist in covering publishing fees. However, LiU researchers are entitled to a reduced fee at some publishers and in some academic journals as part of library subscriptions.

LiU authors are entitled to discounts on publication fees (APC) by the following publishers and journals. Special conditions may apply. In all cases, the corresponding author should be affiliated with LiU. Although the library can offer discounts in a large number of hybrid journals, we would like to emphasize that we primarily recommend gold Open Access journals.
