The library switches from SAB to Dewey

Letters become numbers when the university library changes classification scheme

The National Library of Sweden and a number of Swedish libraries, among them Linköping University Library, have decided that from 1 January 2011 to substitute the SAB classification system with the Dewey Decimal Classification System (DDC).

Library users will notice that books will be organized according to numbers instead of letters. All books labeled with DDC numbers are located in Nya boksamlingen (the new book collection).

At present (January 2013) over 100 000 books have been labeled with DDC numbers. The work entails some relocations in our libraries. During the transition period there will be two separate collections: books shelved according to DDC in Nya boksamlingen (The new book collection), located close to the library’s entrance, and books shelved according to SAB in Boksamlingen (The book collection), in the interior parts of the library.

We have since January 2011 been shelving all new books according to DDC.

We have labeled all reference copies of textbooks (REFKURS) with DDC numbers. At the HumSam Library they are kept behind the counter and are borrowed there for use in the library only. At the TekNat, Campus Norrköping, and Health Sciences Libraries they are shelved near the Nya boksamlingen together with the other DDC labeled books.

We continuously label returned books with DDC numbers.

We have labeled all our reference books with DDC numbers. They are now shelved in Nya boksamlingen.

 Why Dewey?

Using the Dewey Decimal System will provide a number of benefits:

The DDC is the world’s most widely used classification system, used in 135 countries.

The DDC is a well maintained system and is updated regularly.

The management of non-Swedish books will become simplified.

Swedish research will become more internationally visible.
